Dear Parent/Carer,
I would like to draw your attention to an important matter concerning the use of e-bikes, e-scooters, and mopeds for travel to and from school. While this may apply to only a small number of students, it’s crucial that we address the legal and safeguarding responsibilities we have for your child.
E-scooters are classified as motor vehicles under the Road Traffic Act 1988, meaning the same rules that apply to motor vehicles also apply to e-scooters. This includes the need for a licence and insurance.
Currently, it is not possible to obtain insurance for privately owned e-scooters, making their use on roads, pavements, and in public spaces, such as parks and shopping centres, illegal.
For pupils who use an e-bike or moped, we ask that the following guidelines are followed:
- Wear a helmet at all times
- Ensure all necessary insurance is in place
- Notify your child’s KeyWorker if they will be traveling independently on an e-bike or moped to and from school
- Dismount at the school gates and walk the e-bike or moped onto school grounds to avoid any accidents or injury
- Secure the e-bike or moped with a suitable lock in the pupil’s bike store, as it will be left at the
owner’s risk
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s KeyWorker directly.
Thank you for your understanding and support in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all our students.
Kind regards,
Chris Nichols
